How to Tell If Your Cylinder Liner Needs Replacement

Running a worn cylinder liner too long risks blow‑by, oil contamination, and even piston seizure. Here's how to spot the signs before failure.

1. Measure the wear

Use an internal micrometer to check bore ovality and taper at top, middle, and bottom. Compare against your engine manual's maximum allowable limits. Exceeding them means replace.

2. Look for visible damage

Deep vertical scoring, cavitation pitting (especially near cooling water side), or cracks around scavenge ports or cooling bores – all indicate it's time for a new liner.

3. Check piston ring seating

If rings don't contact the liner evenly, blow‑by increases and power drops. That's a sign the liner has lost its original profile.

⚠ When in doubt, measure. When near limit, replace.

We supply GENUINE and OEM cylinder liners for MAN, Wärtsilä, Sulzer, and more.
